I've spent a lot of time looking at the XCSOAR Tactical Glide program. I
am attracted to it partly due to its functionality and he fact that its
FREE...I am running an IPAQ 3955 PPC2002 and a Holux GR-271 Compact Flash
GPS Receiver. I have downloaded XCSOAR 5.14 onto the PDA...I am now
LOST...I live in Va Beach Va and fly out of the Tidewater Soaring Society
at Garner Airfield 3VA8. I need to know what files I will need to
sucessfully run this program...

Does anyone on the easteren seaboard run XCSOAR? I have Skype, email and
I'll call...anything to get this loaded and running...hell i'll send it
to someone to get up and running...I just want to be able to soar XC here
in flatland Va running a decent tactical glide computer...

I have also installed it on my Garmin M3 Ique...if thats an easier install
and upload...

Travis -

I run XCSOAR and I love it; but it is definitely not the easiest
system to set up...

First you need a terrain file. If you can't find one for your local
area, check out the XC Soar Terrain Generator:
http://xcsoar.dd.com.au/cgi-bin/terrain.pl

Then, go to the Worldwide Turnpoint Exchange and get the proper
Airspace and Turnpoint files:
http://soaringweb.org/TP

To figure out the proper formats and files to get, there's actually a
decent manual for XCSoar you can download and print out here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/xcsoar/XCSoar-manual-500.pdf?download

Good luck!

There are all the answers, you can ask anything!

Actually, First you need a waypoint file. Then you can go to
http://xcsoar.dd.com.au/cgi-bin/terrain.pl
and it will generate Terrain (which, btw, almost nobody uses in
'flight' mode).
The documentation for XCSoar beyond version 5.0.0 is spotty. The
Nabble forum will help.
I'm pretty sure on your PDA that at least the waypoint file has to be
in one of the three sub-folders under 'My Documents\XCSoarData\ The
sub-folders are \Config \Persist and \Log. I keep my waypoints,
terrain, etc... in the
\Config folder.
I've been using it for about a year now, and really like it, but have
no point of reference since I haven't tried any other programs (I'm
too cheap!).
